Structure

The structure is tabular: We have sub-divided marine data and information into 11 main "data types" (the rows in the summary table):

  1. Bathymetry, Shoreline Morphology
  2. Structures, Including Oil and Gas Structures and Wrecks
  3. Human Activities (Administration)
  4. Natural Environment
  5. Physical
  6. Chemical
  7. Biological
  8. Geological
  9. Geophysical
  10. Geophysics
  11. Geochemistry
  12. Derived Data Sets

For each data type there is information on resources under 8 "topic" headings (the columns in the table).

Reference and Example Data Types

Provides a table cross referencing against equivalent categories in other schema:

… and examples of data types falling within the categories.

Data Collectors and Sources

Identifies organisations which collect and may act as the original sources of marine data under the identified categories.

Data Collators and Publishers

Identifies organisations which collate and publish data under the identified categories. May not always be the same organisation as the original source.

Existing Standards and Guidelines for Data Collection, Management and Collation

Lists recognised standards and guidelines which apply to data collection, management and collation, according to data category.

MDIP Data Archive Centre

Lists MDIP Data Archive Centre (DAC) for the identified data type. In the case of no organisation being identified, a DAC meeting the required standards has not yet been recognised by MDIP.

MetaData Discovery Resources

Provides links to online metadata Discovery resources. Discovery metadata provides basic information on data sources, generally at a project or survey level.

Online Access to Data

Provides links where data / information are available online. In many cases this capability does not yet exist.

Online Upload Capability

Provides links where an online capability exist for organisations to upload data to a Data Archive Centre (DAC). In many cases this capability does not yet exist.
