New Forest Background - Grassland

[Back to Index]

Small ribbons of grassland adjacent to streams and ponds and areas within woodland are usually heavily poached, lightly grazed and enriched by flood water or from forest run off. Although poor in plant species, a number of rarities may be found including coral necklace, small fleabane, penny royal and slender marsh bedstraw. Hampshire purslane, which is confined in Britain to The New Forest, occurs in many of the muddy pools.
