GIS River Typology

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency and the Environment Agency in implementing the Water Framework Directive have identified the need to develop a functional typology of river water bodies.

Initial work on this topic will be reviewed along with the IS infrastructure of the two Agencies to develop a technical specification for tool development. Subsequent activity will develop the GIS tools for creation of input variable to the model and user interfaces to allow for interactive assessment of thresholds between river type classes and class allocations. Field evaluation will form an important part of the quality assurance for the development. The ultimate task will generate the class allocation.

The project is managed through Sniffer, the Scottish and Northern Ireland Forum for Environmental Research.
