Biotope mapping application

The Joint Nature Conservancy Council (JNCC) database of marine surveys is widely used to describe the biotopes used to map coastal and offshore communities. A tool has been developed to assist users assigning samples to the appropriate community class.

The challenges of assigning a sample to the appropriate biotope are being addressed by the development of a database. This simple application allows the user to enter individual species, groups of species or whole sample surveys lists from which the association with the biotopes is made. This allows the user to assess the likely suite of communities to which their sample may belong.
