Evaluation of potential sites for managed realignment on the Solway Firth using GIS.

Changing relative sea levels may put coastal habitats under increasing threat. Scottish Natural Heritage is using GIS decision support tools at a Solway-wide level to assess the options for managed realignment.

Numerous factors influence the viability of a site to act as a potential for managed realignment, whether the site is at the right topographic level, its existing land use and conservation value etc. Using GIS we have assessed the spatial distribution of sites and used simple spatial decision support tools to score and weight the relative significance of sites along the Solway coast.
